Job description
A Service Engineer (BWTS) is responsible for the field service, inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of ballast water treatment systems on seagoing vessels. The role involves working on-site to ensure compliance with international regulations, such as IMO and USCG requirements.
This position is ideal for candidates passionate about maritime environmental compliance, with hands-on engineering expertise and a problem-solving mindset.
Reporting to: Technical Manager
What you'll do:
Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance of BWTS components, including filtration units, UV reactors, electrolysis systems, and control panels.
Check and ensure that the equipment and system operate within the IMO, USCG, regulatory requirements, and relevant standards.
Test and validate systems and suggest improvements
Calibrate instruments to maintain accuracy and reliability.
Identify and resolve system malfunctions (troubleshooting),
Do repairs and adjustments, replace defective parts, and conduct system upgrades when necessary.
Provide remote and on-site technical support to vessel crews and ship operators.
Maintain detailed records of work performed, parts used, and customer interactions.
Work with project management and technical specialists to plan and do jobs
Stay safe at all times
Perform other job-related tasks as assigned
Job requirements
What you need to know and be good at:
Knowledge of BWTS technologies (UV treatment, electro-chlorination, etc.)
Experience in commissioning of BWTS
Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
IMO BWMS Code Familiarisation
Knowledge of industry standards and safety rules for marine processes
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Eagerness to learn and adapt
Ability to work well with customers, co-workers, and contractors
Strong communication skills
Willingness to travel within the region and internationally
Requirements:
Professional (Diploma or Bachelor's) degree in engineering or vocational qualification
3-5 years of experience in a similar role (preferred)
Good English communication skills (verbal and written)
Dutch language skills are a plus but not mandatory
Flexible working hours: work hours may fluctuate depending on vessel schedules and operational needs, and out-of-hours work will be required.
Willingness to travel extensively and work onboard vessels or at yards
Ability to work independently and under pressure in a maritime environment.
Confident, engaging, and able to build relationships and take calculated risks
Willingness to learn and develop
Experience with common productivity tools (like Google Workspace)
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
Valid EU driving license - type B
Medically fit for offshore assignments and working at heights
